Why your skincare has 'stopped working’.

I often hear in clinic that clients like to switch up their products often because they ‘stop working’.

I totally get why this feels like it’s happening - you try something new and your skin feels amazing for a month then then… nothing. You stop seeing that dramatic improvement in texture, fine lines, congestion or luminosity and it feels like your products have given up on you.

But the truth is? You skincare didn’t stop working - your skin adapted.

Which is the goal of any good active skincare product!

When this happens, it’s important to remain consistent to maintain those benefits to the skin. Especially for products like the Vital C serum for example, which will give hydration in the short term, but take up to 12 weeks of consistent use for the peptides and Vitamin C show their true colours for age support.

Another great example is Retinol (or anything in the vitamin A family).

When first introduced, you’ll see the effects mostly on the surface of the skin, improving texture, pigmentation and luminosity in the first 2-8 weeks. Once the skin has adapted to that strength of Retinol, it will maintain those improvements while it slowly starts to build collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the deeper layers of the skin - giving it the true wrinkle smoothing effect it claims.

If you constantly chop and change the product because you stop seeing that immediate improvement in your skin, you’re preventing your skin from having the consistency it needs to really do the work you want.

So, unless your skin is irritated or worsening without cause, the best friend to good skincare products is a healthy dose of patience (and SPF!).
